Osheaga Music and Arts Festival (Festival Musique et Arts) is back, for its eighth year! Aug 2-4, Parc Jean Drapeau on Montreal’s Île Sainte-Hélène will host a huge European-style musical and visual arts celebration, the largest festival of its kind in Canada.
In this oasis of greenspace in the heart and festive ambiance of Montreal summer, approximately 100 bands will appear over the course of the three days, on various outdoor stages. Osheaga is not only company to big names of the music industry but also many emerging talents from North America and Europe. Just a few of the 2013 artists lineup include: The Cure, Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, New Order, The Lumineers, Imagine Dragons, Ben Howard and Silversun Pickups (a full schedule is available at osheaga.com).
All ages are welcome and children 10 years and younger are admitted for free when accompanied by an adult with a valid Osheaga ticket. The festival doors will open at noon (rain or shine!), with the first show beginning at 1:00 pm each day and ending around 11:00 pm. To get there, exit at metro station Jean Drapeau (yellow line, direction Longueuil).
“O she ha ga” means “people of shaking hands” in Mowhawk and was the name used for the area that is now Montreal. It is said that Jacques Cartier, where he met the Mohawks near the Lachine rapids, was either offering to shake hands, or asking about the river rapids. So Osheaga is where the Mowhawks met the people of the shaking hands.
The first Osheaga festival was held in 2006 and attracted over 25,000 spectators. Over the years it has steadily grown: this year’s attendance is expected at over 100,000+ fans! Past artists include: Ben Harper, The Smashing Pumpkins, Leslie Feist, Jack Johnson, The Black Keys, Coldplay, The Roots, Arcade Fire, Weezer, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Elvis Costello and The Tragically Hip.
